Social Media.

Social Media Marketing.

THOSE 2 things has been written and talked about the last 2 years a LOT. But believe it or not, not a lot of small businesses or home businesses are using this powerful business and marketing “Zone” yet. Many people, because it is on the internet, shy away for it as if it were the plague.

“I am not a geek” people tell me. Well, we have “ungeeked the geek” for many small and home business owners, and made social media make sense to them

But there are exceptions.

I was talking with a business owner the other day and she made the comment, “I don’t go to those kind of sites. I don’t have time to do that as my business is struggling and I need to go and find more customers.”

That says it all.

That shows a total lack of understanding of what social media/web 2.0 is really about, and what it can do for the average small business and home business -even on a local basis. If people really “got it” about social media marketing, they would be running to the social media zone and staying there.

There is a lot of talk that it is not “proven” as it is too new and the jury is still out on it being a viable marketing process.

I totally disagree. The social media marketer is paving a path for those to follow through a jungle that has never been explored, nor walked. People like proof. People like results. But it is the social media marketer that will create the way that will birth new millionaires with business folks who do “get” the Web 2.0 world. It is not that hard to understand either.

If you can send an email, you can “do” social media marketing. You can master twitter, facebook, myspace, blogs, wikis, podcasts, article marketing, and all the other parts of the new media, if you can send an email. Yes, there is a learning curve, and yes, it does take a little effort-but what doesn’t? We have expanded our business tremendously with social media tactics, and everyday, we wake up with dozens of new leads for our training and consulting business in our email box. How would you like to have that happen to you?

You can. You can tap into an endless pool of leads that will just keep increasing, if you decide to jump into the Social Media zone. And we will be glad to teach you how to maximize for maximum Success with your Social Media efforts.

All you need to do is make a decision that you will take the time and study and learn social media a little at a time, and learn the culture, and the processes of each website.

Here are 7 websites that you must register with to get started in social media if you have a small or home business. Each have “help” tutorials or videos about how to use them properly, and also there is a LOT of information on the web as well on “how to”:

1) http://www.facebook.com

2) http://www.twitter.com

3) http://www.mashable.com (A GREAT website for learning generic social media.)

4) http://www.stumbleupon.com

5) http://www.digg.com

6) http://www.youtube.com

7) http://www.socialmediatrainingnetwork.com’ (A GREAT social website for learning social media tactics for small and or home businesses.)

And then do three things after learning how the site works:

1) CONNECT.
2) COMFORTABLE.
3) CONSTRUCT.

1) CONNECT.

The main thing you need to do is connect with people on these sites, and become a friend with them. Most of these sites have a process to befriend folks. Follow their process. Sound easy enough? But there is a type of friend that we teach that you must become. An “Addition Friend.” This is simply a friend that ADDS to people’s lives, not takes.

On the social media scene, most people are looking to Add, Enhance, Increase, and Enlarge a part of their life. YOU must help them do that with connecting with them and showing them new information about what you do, and how what you do can help them and change them for the better. It MUST not ever be a sales pitch, but simply information that will impact them enough that they may want to connect with you further about that in their life.

If you are a real estate agent, give them info on the 5 Biggest mistakes made while buying a home. If you are a CPA, give them some info on the 3 biggest mistakes made on tax returns. If you are in skin care, give them the 7 best ways to keep your skin healthy. You get the idea. You can find this type of information all over the web. Just send them the web address (url) to the article or blog post with a short note saying you thought of them when you ran across this.

We call it “Connection Marketing” and it WORKS when you allow it to.

CONNECT with the person –> CONNECT with their goals –> then CONNECT them to valuable information that will help them achieve them. Then most of the people Will then connect with your interests and be willing to help you with yours.

2) COMFORTABLE.

You must get the people on the social media sites COMFORTABLE with you.

How?

Talk about them, and how you can help them reach their goals and dreams- either with what you do, or with what you know. We call it “Comfortable Conversation(TM).” You must hold online “conversations” with people and get them comfortable with you, and comfortable with staying connected with you. You do this by talking about what THEY are interested in, and then you PROVE to them you are serious about adding value to their life.

It is ALL about Value in the social media arena. People expect Value in your messages and communication, and if you give them things that will help them in their endeavors, (blog posts on their industry, articles on doing what they do better, etc,) they will get very comfortable with you, and even helping you with YOUR endeavors. They will be moving towards you quickly if you practice that focus in your social media efforts.

3) CONSTRUCT.

Simply, in Social media Marketing, you must Construct a bridge between you and the person that eventually leads OFFLINE and onto the telephone.

THAT is the secret to Success in social media marketing. We call it the “TIO Factor.” Take It Offline and let the personalisation begin.

You have connected with the person- in person-at least in voice.

You have gotten them comfortable with you by your interest in helping them achieve their goals.

Now you must construct a path that allows you to say, “What is your contact number? I would love to chat with you for real over the phone.” Then just do that. It may take a few days or a couple of weeks. But if you could pick up 10 new customers with this conversation would it be worth it?

eCommerce websites can easily get a lot of visitors if you can properly optimise the website for both search engines as well as the visitors. You can never isolate user experience from search engine optimisation. Today, they work as complimentary to each other.

Ensuring better user experience is important since search engines like Google are giving preference to user experience and they have started using it as a parameter to determine search engine ranking of websites. They mean business and whoever can offer better user experience would get better ranking in the search result pages.

Creating a user friendly interface:

Undoubtedly, this is the very first step to run a successful eCommerce website. Normally eCommerce websites have thousands of dynamically created pages and content management become tough.

You must group different products under proper and specific category. You can create static pages as landing pages for each product category. This would also help you a lot to optimise the content for specific primary keywords. Here we must say that proper grouping of primary keywords are also as important as the category grouping. This will definitely make your life easier and your visitors will find what they are looking for.

Install a good internal search engine with different verticals so that visitors can easily find what they are looking. But try to make the process as simple as possible depending on your target market’s background. And you must remember here that the same person may act differently while visiting a social networking website and an eCommerce site. Thus you must be critical in implementing any interface.

Search engine optimisation of an eCommerce website for better ranking?

The best thing about eCommerce website is that you may create thousands of pages. In most of the cases, the product name itself would fetch you a lot of website. And in most of the cases they are your target audience or prospective customer who wants to buy the product or may buy the product in future.

As the very first step of optimisation, do not reproduce the content provided by a manufacturer. Rewrite the whole content in a user friendly way. It is always better to add a ‘Features’ section to highlight the best features of the product.

eCommerce websites are always rich in images – you must use proper alt tags and title tags for those images. You can also use captions under every image where you can easily put some key words. You can also think about image mapping.

Do not forget to use keywords in page title, Meta tags, H1, H2 tags and other important locations.

Create and submit a XML sitemap in Google.

These are some primary considerations. You should also follow other search engine optimisation best practices. You can also contact a good SEO company to market your website.

Social network marketing has proven to be a very viable way to grow an online business. In fact it seems that many entrepreneurs rely primarily upon the social networks for marketing online. It is not uncommon to visit one of these sites and see a healthy percentage of the exchanges are targeting the solicitation of a product or service.

As recent history has shown online marketers are quick to identify growth opportunities for their businesses and social marketing has proven to be no exception.

The original intent of social networking sites were for people to gather to share ideas, interests, stay in touch, or even meet new people all on a casual basis. With this in mind it is important to identify and adhere to the proper code of behavior that is expected while participating at one of these sites. This is especially true if your intent is to conduct business since your success will be based upon building relationships with other site members.

Here are 5 things you’ll want to avoid doing that could sabotage your social marketing efforts:

Not Taking Part in Discussions

The main idea of social networks is just that to ‘socialize’ with other members. You need and want to mingle to get become familiar with other participants while allowing them to become familiar with you. To not take part in online discussions and then attempt to market something is just downright rude. The result is you will be identified as nothing more than an opportunist or spammer and will rightfully be ignored.

Becoming Fully Automated

Some sites such as Twitter offer you the opportunity to program some of your comments in advance. The idea is great and is meant for people who want to interact at a certain time but will not be available. Some marketers and you know who you are, rely heavily if not exclusively on this type of automated system. Worse yet they don’t even try to interact all they do is repeatedly send sales pitches. Once again by doing this you’re destined to be ignored by others and labeled a spammer.

These are social networking sites whose intentions are for PEOPLE to interact NOT SOFTWARE!

Continually Selling

Your intent at these sites is to be building relationships with other members to gain their trust and loyalty. Eventually you can introduce different products or services but the majority of the interactions should be social in nature. If you’re constantly pitching a new product, idea, service, or opportunity NOBODY will want to associate with you.

Disruptive or Antisocial Behavior

Your conduct like everybody else at any social site should be courteous and respectful of others. You are a guest and should behave as such. Tactful and polite disagreements are acceptable but rudeness, vulgarity, harsh criticism or other like behavior should not be displayed.

Creating Fictitious Profiles

Most every site gives you the opportunity to ‘register’ your profile upon signing up and it is encouraged to do so. It’s hard to befriend or socialize with anybody when you don’t/won’t reveal your identity.

The same is true with falsifying your profile. What’s the sense? If you’re going to do that then why even bother joining? In fact people have a legitimate reason to ‘question’ your intentions if you are displaying a fake identity. If you are in business you obviously don’t intend to be so for long. That sends a real bad message!

Social network marketing can be an extremely effective and efficient way to grow your online business. and rapidly. There are many methods you can use for marketing online but few surpass the speedy results or ‘viral capabilities’ that these sites offer. It is up to you as a sincere and responsible business owner to identify and practice the proper etiquette that is expected when participating at any social site. Your ability to do so will enable you to maximize the full potential these sites have to offer for both you and your business.

When building a web site, there are two basic tasks involved. The first is the design of the web pages itself which is called web design. The second is how to link between these pages that are designed in the first step and forward pages according to user requests and the data received by the user.

The first task is the web site design. As stated above, it involves designing the site pages. The designer here deals mainly with the HTML code. This language is used to build the web pages and it is the primary language of course. The responsibly of the web site designer is to design a layout for each page of the site. For example, the designer may determine the placement of images, videos, advertisements and the main content for the page.

Before beginning to make the design process, each element must be known of course. The designer must be aware of what the pages will contain. After knowing the page contents, which can be images, ads, banners…etc, the designer will look at the layout of the page. Thus, the designer acts as a coordinator for the elements of the page. Also he may receive the elements that will constitute the page as blocks without knowing its details. He may just coordinate it.

The elements that form the web page are web languages which can be different than HTML code. It may be JavaScript code, Flash or any client language. Note that the term web page element is used here to represent any code that is executed by the browser on the client side. Below, server side code will be explored which forms the web site development task.

Steps to Create Successful Web Design

The second task of the web site design is the server side programming development. This is called simply web development. Once the designer completed the web pages design, it is the role of the programmer to design the program that link between these pages. This is true for interactive sites that include forms filled by the user. When the user fills the form and click ‘submit’, the client sends the request to the server to analyze the data. It is the role of the web developer to write the programs that process this data and send back a page accordingly.

Let us take a simple example. If a site has a page that collects username and password and send back to the server. The site has to process the data sent by the client. It will have two choices for the server. If the username and password is correct, the server will send a “successfully logged in” page. Otherwise, it will send “error” page which will contain again the username and password fields to be entered again by the user.

In the above example, determining which page will be sent back to the client is by the program written by the web developer. This program is server side because it is executed by the server. The server side program has two main roles. First it process the data sent by the client. Second it picks the proper page from the pages available that are deigned by the web designer and send back to the client. Moreover, it may write dynamic text to the page that sends such as the current date.

Many server side programs exist that perform the above operations. The most common languages are the PHP, AS.NET, and JSP. These languages are put directly in the page within the HTML code but with remarkable tags. When the server finds their tags, it will execute them. These languages are called also scripts. Remember again that the above languages are server side languages. This is because there are also client side languages that are executed on the client host by the browser.

Search engine optimisation generally aims to improve your website’s search engine rankings. If you want to make sales, you have to drive great traffic to the site. And in order to achieve that you need to conduct a search engine optimisation campaign.

Where Does Search Engine Optimisation Begin?

Search engine optimisation or SEO generally begins with an assessment of the website. You should know the current search engine ranking of your website. If you are hiring SEO firm, they would do the same too. This will give you and the SEO company an idea what the reasonable objectives will be. The company would then tailor the appropriate SEO strategies.

Since searches are done through keywords, the work would start by choosing the keywords to optimize. There could be numerous popular keywords. But one cannot really target the top keywords because of budget constraints. If you bid for them in pay per click campaigns, they generally cost higher.

At times your business may also not need the most top rated keyword. For instance, if your business is vacation house rental in California you don’t have to target more general keywords such as “vacation house”or “vacation house rental.”You could choose to optimize “vacation house in California”or “valifornia vacation house rental”instead. It could be cheaper and more effective for you.

Search Engine Optimisation: Updating Website Content and Link Development

After choosing the keywords, you or the SEO company would have to update the website content. The titles, headings and meta tags need to be in congruence with the said keywords. At times, more web pages may be needed. The actual main web content would also need to have the keywords repeated or spread in appropriate number.

The website also needs to have the right structure. This will not only facilitate better search engine indexing. It will also help give visitors and buyers a better shopping experience.

Once the website is ready, link development is done. The website would need incoming links. The more quality links the site has the higher search engine ranking it will have.

This means that the links should not come from link farms. The links should count as a vote to your website. What you can do is write articles for free article sites. Since there usually are links at the bottom of the articles, they help too. You can participate in forums and have a link to your website as a signature. These are legitimate means of growing your incoming links.

You will probably have to wait and see how the changes resulted. If you have chosen the right keywords, traffic will surely improve. You will also get more sales so your search engine optimisation would be a success.

SEO is a proven effective provider SEO services. When you hand your site’s search engine optimisation campaign to SEO, you are assured of great improvements and good results. You will have a more visible website and a more booming business.

Some of San Francisco’s top media buyers talk about the significance of the new IAB guidelines at Connected Marketing Week in San Francisco, 2010. Matthew Boyd, SVP, Western Sales, ValueClick, stressed the importance of the recent IAB announcement of the first 16 ad networks to commit to the certification process for the quality assurance guidelines and the level of comfort it provides the San Francisco media buying community around working with certified ad networks and exchanges. Next, Matt interviews Kim Small, associate media director, Universal McCann, about key takeaways from their panel. Kim says the new IAB guidelines will have significant impact on her buying decisions. Christopher Ukko, PHD Network, said one of his key takeaways was the transparency of the IAB guidelines and how ad verification will become a more important component in his media buys. Finally, Lindsay Wong, associate media director, Razorfish, concludes that agency education will be the biggest stepping stone and how important it will be for buyers to become educated about the new guidelines, including teaching the media planners about the new IAB certification.

Online and offline businesses, small enterprises and mega companies, “mom and pop” shops, and the huge franchise known around the world. What do all these businesses have in common? They are flocking to the internet for promotion and marketing purposes. Among the tools and strategies being employed by businesses on the internet, social media is probably the hippest, coolest, “do or die” thing out there now-a-days. So it is worth exploring the question: does social network marketing work?

THE CONCEPT

The idea behind social media is for people to be, well, social. The creators of sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, did not set out to create a space where businesses and marketers could come and make hundreds or even thousands of dollars without spending a cent. Their intention was to give people a save environment in which to connect and build relationships. In fact, ALL social media, with the possible exception of Facebook business pages, frown upon the idea of “Spamming” which is nothing else than bombarding people with unsolicited offers, sales, and/or business promotions of any kind. So, with that in mind, it stand to reason that the concept of social media marketing is a bit of an oxymoron. How do you sell your product or service without presenting your sales pitch or offering people your latest and greatest deal? Well, the short answer is that you don’t.

THE MISTAKE

Hundreds of businesses and marketers are flocking to social media with the sole intention of making money. You’d be hard-pressed to visit any social network without finding someone who posts link after link in the hopes of having someone bite the bait. Many such “marketers” have been banned from these sites, only to come back with a new email address, create a new account and repeat the same mistake over and over and over. The reality is that using social media to pitch a sale, promote a business or enroll prospects does NOT work. You cannot enter these sites thinking that you will create a solid empire out of them and expect to see results. Keep in mind that people do not come to these sites looking to buy anything. People go to amazon or ebay, credit card in hand ready to make a purchase. That is never the case with social media. They are there to be social!

THE BOTTOM LINE

That being the case, then, why is it that so many continue to rave about the wonder of social network marketing? Well, the bottom line is that social media is a great tool for that which it was intended to do, which is build relationships in a viral, high-speed, global manner. If you think about that statement very carefully, you’ll have the answer you’ve been looking for. Does social network marketing work? Well, if you take the time to use social media to build real, meaningful, effective relationships, then you have just found the most powerful and effective tool available to any entrepreneur or business out there. See, the trick is that you cannot sell anything on these sites, except real content and real value. If you take the time to connect with people and show them that you are genuinely concerned with helping THEM, they will begin to trust and respect you, and will, in time, come to you looking for that which you have to offer. Yes, you understood correctly, they will ASK YOU for your product or service without you having to pitch, sell, or prospect. THAT is why social network marketing can be so powerful!

So, does social network marketing work? The short answer is that it depends on your approach. If you come at it expecting to sell, sell, sell, then chances are it probably won’t work for you. If, however, you arrive at these sites in the true spirit of helping others and building meaningful relationships, then you have just found a great tool, which, in time, will help you build and even explode your business.

As a business website owner, you must maintain integrity. Many of the social networking websites are

engaged in unethical behavior contributed by the website owners, which is a major drawback when trying to
market your products and services. There are many methods, which you as a responsible website owner
can establish the behavior performed on your business website.

Respect the privacy of people online

You must remain focused that while using social network marketing in your marketing toolbox for your
products and/or services that you’re involved with actual people that are internet users often referred to
as a community. Based on this community, your business will be a part of it but there’s no room for you to
invade people’s privacy. Do not send spam ever, this includes your friends, their friends and their friends
friends, etc.

The choices for your social networking strategies

Many marketers participate in social sites like FaceBook and MySpace with a plan to drive traffic to their
business websites. This is the ethical way however; spamming the social community with images or links in
order to lure them to your business website is unethical and will eventually by noticed by Google or other
search engines.

Do not spam people with ads to your business website

Social networking websites are very in tune and current with spamming practices, which are noticed as
unethical and will eliminate those who habitually perform such methods for their social media marketing.

Always be professional and honest with the online communities

To successfully use social networking as a method with integrity you need to participate ethically as a
member within the online communities. You need to register with that specific community in order to
become a member of the online community. Be a participant within the online groups, which are related to
your area of expertise or products and services, which your business offers. You want to make friends
within this online community while proving yourself an expert within the particular field, which you are
offering products and services.

Publish quality content on the social networking website

You will need to publish quality content upon these particular social networking websites. Avoid shoving
your products and services down the throats of the online community. Never mislead or give incorrect
information referencing your products and services.

Examples of unethical social networking behavior

A great example of such unethical behavior is leaving a blog or post within the online community while
disguising to be a customer endorsing your own products and services. Honesty is the best policy with the
online community, which you belong to that gives you the ability to explain your products and services. The
decision is up to the online community to view your products and services as compared to spamming them
information.

Never belittle your competitors. Never point out shortcomings of them either. You can however, specify
what makes your products and services different from your competition.

There are no set guidelines on ethical practices with online social network marketing however; you will need
to educate yourself with media law while knowing the potential dangers of defamation as well as invading
people’s privacy. Conduct yourself professionally as well as intellectually. If you follow these
guidelines of what not to perform, you will thrive in your goal of becoming successful.

Often large companies set aside huge budgets for their Website development & designing. It is so true that the big boys can actually afford to allocate a huge pie of the total investment to achieve the kind of Web presence, they prefer and choose. Also, they can decide about the ultimate look for their website to gain importance in the business world. However, small businesses often do not have a large chuck of money to spend on website designing and construction, although their presence on the Web is, in many ways, even more important.

Therefore, designing & developing for a small business website can be infinitely more complex. Money is limited in this case, but results need to be crucial if growth or even survival is to be achieved. It is also important as a lot is depended upon getting a Website right first time so it begins to show results early on in the game.

Small Business Web Site Design Strategies

Despite the limited budgets and resources, it is a worth to hire a professional for small business web site design. As it is already cleared that results are important here and who better to give you success than a professional? Hiring the professional service for website designing and development helps a company can easily able to reflect its organizational goals and aspirations. No matter how tight your budget is, it is always convenient to choose the best service available in the market. It is advised not to try to do it yourself unless you have a fair amount of experience with Website development.

However, there are other issues to be handled carefully besides the website designing. It may take a long time to understand the concepts and usability of search engine optimization issues, if you decide to do it yourself. Allocating the best resources will help you o take an added advantage of making a website with search engine sensibility and pass on the saving onto you.
